MICROSOFT at NRF 2019
Capturing the Story as It Happened
Official Microsoft Photographer | National Retail Federation | New York City, NY
THE PROJECT
The National Retail Federation's annual show brought tens of thousands of people to New York for three days of conversations around the future of retail. Microsoft had a major presence throughout the event, from its exhibition space and technology demonstrations to partner conversations, executive appearances, and keynote programming.
Working as Microsoft's official photographer, my assignment was to create a visual record of that presence as it unfolded, capturing both the scale of the event and the people, technology, and conversations happening within it.
MY ROLE
I photographed Microsoft's coverage across the conference, moving between the show floor, booth activity, partner demonstrations, lounge conversations, executive appearances, and keynote sessions.
Working largely independently in a constantly changing live environment meant making decisions quickly: where I needed to be, which moments mattered, what would tell the strongest story, and what Microsoft's teams would need next. Each day, I also managed the photography workflow from capture through selects, editing, backup, and delivery, often turning around finished imagery while the event was still underway.
FINDING THE STORY IN A CROWDED ROOM
A trade show floor is visually busy by nature. Thousands of attendees, competing displays, changing lighting, overlapping schedules, and conversations happening everywhere at once can easily turn event photography into a collection of disconnected moments.
My goal was to find the story inside that activity. That meant moving between wide images that established the scale of Microsoft's presence and smaller moments that showed people interacting with the technology, partners sharing ideas, and executives connecting with the audience.
The challenge wasn't simply documenting what happened. It was recognizing which moments could communicate what was happening without needing an explanation.
FROM THE SHOW FLOOR TO THE NEWS CYCLE
Live-event photography becomes most valuable when the images can move almost as quickly as the event itself.
Throughout NRF, I selected, edited, and delivered photography on tight turnarounds so Microsoft could use the work while conversations around the conference were still happening. Images from the event supported Microsoft's communications and external coverage, including photography of CEO Satya Nadella used in reporting following his NRF appearance.
That immediate path from capture to edit to delivery to publication is what made the assignment especially rewarding. The photographs weren't simply a record of the event. They became part of how the event was communicated beyond the people who were there.
